November 2010: Getting the Most Out of Tab Cut, Die Cut Tabs

Most people don't think twice about index tabs. That's why your friends at Rapid Bind are here!

Without these handy but commonplace organizing devices, hunting for information in printed materials can resemble a game of hide and seek. Whether your product is a directory, reference book or technical manual, index tabs help end users find the information they need quickly and easily.

Tabs come in two main varieties – tab cut and die cut – and there's a time and place for both. Let's take a look at some options and considerations when planning your next project involving tabs.

Standard "Tab Cut" Tabs

Shape: When most people think of index tabs, the traditional "S" shape comes to mind. This cost-effective, standard tab product comes in tab heights of 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, and 1/2-inch. Standard tab cut tabs can be automatically created for highly efficient and cost-effective production. Tab cut tabs are economical for both long and short runs because makeready times are fast and high end equipment is fast.

Reinforcement: Standard tabs cannot fulfill their role if they are damaged during use. You may want to consider reinforcing the tab with a clear or colored Mylar. Many colors are available. We can also reinforce the spine for durability of drill holes.

Production Tip: When planning Mylar tab projects, use only wax-free inks and coatings in your tab and reinforcement areas to ensure proper Mylar adhesion.

Unique "Die Cut" Tabs

Need your tab project to stand out? Consider custom die cut tabs to add distinctive flair and eye-catching appeal. Over the years, we've produced square tabs, rounded corner tabs, diagonal angle tabs and more. These unusual shapes help transform a good piece into a gorgeous one.

Let Rapid Bind help you with your layout for either standard tab cut or die cut tabs. This will help ensure this component works for your project as a whole. In perfect bound projects, tabs must be folded prior to face trimming, otherwise the protruding tab extensions will be cut off.
